(Un)Simple wayfinding for student spaces

Task
To develop a wayfinding system for the UrFU Community Center in Yekaterinburg, located next to the new dormitories and the campus under construction in the Novokoltsovsky microdistrict.
Solution
When we set out to design the navigation at the Community Center, we were primarily looking for ideas that would be organic and relate to the architecture, facade design, and interior design. In addition, it was important to create signage that would be in line with the spirit and audience of the facility, flexible, mobile and quick to change.

Perforations adorning the building panels as well as inserts of orange and red panels formed the basis of the design. We decided to use volumetric elements in the form of a cube, parallelepiped and cylinder as basic components for forming the media.
As in our childhood we made cubes from them step by step to form the whole wayfinding system, which obeyed a rigid system and rules. After all, volumetric navigation has more than one side, and the information and its quantity are different. This is a real puzzle in design.
The outwardly simple solution of promdesign is in fact also deceptive. A unique technology was developed to create these elements to have perfect cubic or cylindrical shapes with rounded corners and edges. The result is wayfinding with excellent visual and tactile characteristics.

The exterior street signage also uses the shapes of the facade and interior wayfinding elements, as well as color. At the same time, it had to echo the unified wayfinding system of the entire Universiade Village territory. Therefore, only the side part of the Community Center served as a unique marker, while the main steles were designed in the general concept of the territory.
