Olympic mood. Wayfinding for the Yekaterinburg Arena

Task
Ekaterinburg Arena was virtually rebuilt for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. We had to develop and implement a visual communication and environmental design system taking into account all the new requirements of FIFA and other approving organizations in the project. In addition, we had to support or complement the stylistic difference in the architectural solutions of the facility: the modern stadium building and the historic facades of the old stadium, which became a full-fledged part of the new facility.
The concept was based on the idea of conveying the mood of the Olympics of the 60-70s, with their bright victories of athletes from Russia and other countries. Characteristic elements in the design of sportswear of that time, stripes, which have become popular today in various clothing styles, determined the graphic basis of the navigation system and art objects.

Solution
We defined the principles of circulation, location, format and quantity of information media to guide visitors through the venue as if they were a “navigator”. The interior wayfinding system and the stadium's exterior design work in harmony with the colour, alphabetical and numerical signage in the environment. They provide continuity to the guide to the locations indicated on the tickets and guide the public through the interior spaces — including common areas — without overloading them with unnecessary information.

Key data
  • 4-metre-high letters to mark sectors A, B, C, D, perfectly visible from a long distance.
  • 76 indoor and outdoor artistic pieces: halftone graphics (raster) on walls, from 2 to 8 m².
  • Row numbering in the stands (using templates and metal numbers): approximately 5,500 applications.
  • 24 totems/orientation steles installed along the visitor route.
  • 139 information light boxes at entrances and in interior spaces.

In addition
It should be noted that the recognizability of the new central stadium today is supported not only by the famous fragments of the walls, the cultural heritage of Soviet neoclassics, but also by the new core of the architectural concept - the atrium with a canopy, which looks like a large bowl. The agency's designers decided to preserve this continuity when creating the new logo of Ekaterinburg Arena and to use the graphic approach that we have laid down in the navigation design, interior and exterior design of the stadium. As a reminder, in 2011 we also developed and implemented a navigation and design system for the newly reconstructed Ekaterinburg Central Stadium.
